Top ten picture books which teach children about love

As it’s Valentine’s day later this week, I thought I’d share my top ten picture books which teach children about love.

Mummy Do You Love Me?

This is one of our favourite picture books about a mummy and baby chick. It has a beautiful repetitive rhyme which we’ve learnt by heart and we often use it after a disagreement. “Sometimes you make me mad, sometimes you make me sad, but no matter what you say or do, I’ll always love you!” It reinforces the unconditional love between a parent and children and helps children to understand that we all experience different emotions but our love remains.

No Matter What

This is another beautiful picture book about the unconditional love a parent has for their child. It is a book full of warmth and happiness but it also explores big worries little people may have and offers comfort and hope. I have to pre warn you; it is likely to bring a tear to you eye when you read it to your special little person!

Guess How Much I Love You

This is a well known book which epitomises love. It’s been a firm favourite in our house since the little dude was a bump. I fondly recall sitting in the nursing chair, in his newly decorated nursery, reading this book to my ever growing bump.

Superhero Mum or Superhero Dad

These are really fun rhyming picture books which explain why, as parents, we are like superheroes to our children. To the world we may be just one person but to our children we are the world! Equally, the book highlights that our children are our superheroes and reinforces that special parent/child bond.

You Make Me Happy

This is a feel good book about love and friendship. It highlights how wonderful life is when you have a special friend by your side.

I’ll Love You Aways

This beautiful picture book is a true declaration of love, full of reassurance that love is long lasting. It also comes with a “tear jerker” warning though!!

Dragon Loves Penguin

This is a fantastic story full of warmth, which celebrates difference and unconditional love.

The Invisible String

This is a book which explores love and grief and would really help a little person who is coming to terms with a loss. It was recommended to me by a friend who is a play therapist and is a truly fantastic book!

Here We Are

We absolutely love this book which was initially gifted to us by a close friend for the little dude’s second birthday. It is a beautiful book just to look at, feel and smell…and its contents don’t disappoint either!  This book teaches children to love our amazing planet and most importantly themselves. It highlights that we all different and encourages kindness to all living things. There are loads of fantastic information facts in there too! This is a must have for your bookshelf!

Snail and the Whale

Another popular book and rightly so. This is a story about love and friendship which highlights the importance of taking care of nature and our planet.

This list could have been endless but I’ve somehow narrowed it down to ten books about love. I do hope you enjoy these stories as much as we do. If you click on any of the links and make a purchase, as an Amazon affiliate, I will get a very small percentage of the purchase price at no extra cost to you. Do also check out my Story Station “Love and Hugs” bundle too. Three of the titles I’ve listed above appear in the bundle at a great price and include some Story Station ideas to learn and play around the “love and hugs” theme.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog, if you get time to review it, it would be very much appreciated.
